Wool carpet cleaning, done with care

Wool is one of the most common carpets in Christchurch homes, and it needs a different touch to synthetic carpet. It holds more water, needs the right products and doesn’t like too much heat. Our own home has wool carpet and young kids, and we use exactly the same products and process on yours.

How we clean wool carpet

The same careful process every time, adjusted for wool.

  1. 1

    Walk-through first

We check the carpet, the high-traffic areas and any spots or stains before we start, and tell you what to expect.

  2. 2

    Premium wool pre-spray

On wool we switch to a higher-grade pre-spray that is gentler on the fibre than everyday cleaners.

  3. 3

    Gentle agitation where needed

Where the pile is heavily soiled, a counter-rotating brush (CRB) works the pre-spray through and loosens soil without fraying the fibre.

  4. 4

    Controlled rinse and extraction

Hot water extraction, with a fibre rinse where suitable. We control both the water and the temperature for wool, so the carpet isn’t over-wetted or overheated.

  5. 5

    Groom and dry

We groom the pile so it dries evenly and looks its best, then give you honest drying advice.

Why wool is different

  • Wool soaks up more water than synthetic carpet, so too much moisture means slow drying.
  • Harsh, high-alkaline products can dull or damage the fibre.
  • Thick wool pile holds more dirt deep down, so agitation matters.
  • Wool is naturally hard-wearing and resists soiling well when it’s looked after.

Drying time

  • In good conditions carpet can be dry in around half a day.
  • Carpet type and weather make a big difference, so thick or wool carpet can take longer, up to 3 days in cold, damp weather.
  • Open windows, heat pumps and fans help a lot. We’ll tell you what works best for your home.

Questions about wool carpet cleaning

Can wool carpet be cleaned with hot water extraction?

Yes. Hot water extraction is a good way to clean wool, as long as the products suit the fibre and the moisture is kept under control. That’s how we do it.

How long does wool carpet take to dry?

In good conditions it can be dry in around half a day. Carpet type and weather make a big difference, so in cold, damp weather it can take up to 3 days. Good airflow and heating speed it up.

Will cleaning shrink or damage my wool carpet?

Problems usually come from over-wetting, too much heat or harsh chemicals. We control the water and temperature, use a premium pre-spray for wool, and check the carpet before we start.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

Yes. Our own home has wool carpet and young children, and we use the same products there. They’re safe for children and pets once the carpet is dry.
