Why is beach sand hard on carpet?
Sand is sharp and heavy. It sinks to the base of the pile, where normal vacuuming struggles to reach. Every time someone walks over it, the grains grind against the fibres.
Over time that wears the carpet and makes it look dull, especially just inside the doors and along the hallway. In homes near the beach, the entry areas often look older than the rest of the room, even when the carpet is the same age.
How do you get sand and grit out?
A thorough vacuum before I arrive makes a real difference, because it lifts the loose sand first. The preparing for a carpet clean guide covers what to do beforehand.
On the day I pre-spray the soiled areas and use CRB agitation where the grit is packed in. I then rinse and extract with hot water from my Hydramaster Boxxer 318 truck-mount, which has strong suction to pull out fine sand along with the dirt. The full process is on my hot water extraction page.
Does coastal weather affect drying?
It can. Drying always depends on ventilation, the weather, the carpet fibre and how soiled it was. On a still, damp day by the coast, opening windows and keeping air moving helps a lot. I set up air movers while I work and give you guidance on the day for your home.
What homes do I see in the Brightons?
A real mix: older beach cottages, family homes, units and plenty of rentals, with South Brighton running down the spit between the sea and the estuary. Many homes here had earthquake repairs too. Rentals see a lot of different feet, and sandy shoes add up fast. Rentals near the beach often need an end of tenancy carpet clean where sand has worked into bedrooms and hallways.
Which rooms suffer most from sand?
Usually the hallway, the room nearest the back door and any bedroom kids head to straight from the beach. If you only want those areas done, that’s fine. Tell me which rooms when you text and I’ll quote just those.
Can the tiled entry be cleaned too?
Yes. Many beach homes have tiles at the front or back door to catch sand. Grout lines in those areas trap grit and darken over time. See tile and grout cleaning.
What do I need on the day?
Parking near an entrance and an outside tap. Most streets here are flat with easy parking, and my hoses reach roughly 45 m from the van.
Nearby suburbs I also cover: Shirley and Burwood, Linwood and Woolston, Sumner and Redcliffs, plus North New Brighton, Bexley, Aranui and Parklands.
Frequently asked questions
Should I vacuum before you come?
Yes, please, especially near the doors. Getting the loose sand up first means the hot water clean can focus on the fine grit and soil deeper in the pile.
Will cleaning fix carpet that has been worn by sand?
Cleaning removes the grit and brightens the fibres, but it can’t repair fibres that are already worn or flattened. I’ll point out any worn areas at the start.
What helps keep sand out between cleans?
A good mat outside and inside each door, and a shoes-off habit after the beach. Vacuuming entry areas often stops sand settling deep into the pile.
Can you clean salt water or sunscreen marks off the couch?
Some of these marks on fabric couches can be removed and others only lightened. Send me a photo and I’ll tell you honestly what to expect. See upholstery cleaning.
