How Often Should You Clean Your Carpets?

There’s no single right answer. It depends on who lives in the house, how much foot traffic the carpet gets and what it’s made of. Here’s how I’d think about it, plus the signs that it’s time for a clean.

How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?

For a typical home, a deep clean about once a year is a sensible starting point. Homes with pets, young children or a lot of foot traffic usually benefit from cleaning more often, and a quiet home with careful owners can go longer.

The better question is what your carpet looks like. Grey traffic lanes, flattened pile and marks that keep coming back are a better guide than the calendar.

How often should I vacuum?

Vacuum the busy areas at least twice a week and the rest of the house weekly. In a home with pets or young children, the main living areas often need vacuuming most days.

You can also cut down how much dirt reaches the carpet in the first place. Put a good mat outside and inside each entrance, and ask people to take shoes off at the door. In Christchurch winters, wet shoes and gravel from paths and driveways do a lot of the damage, so a mat at the back door is just as useful as one at the front.

Vacuuming is the single best thing you can do for carpet. Grit acts like sandpaper on the fibres, and removing it regularly keeps carpet looking better for longer and makes professional cleans more effective. Slow, overlapping passes pick up far more than a quick once-over.

How does your household change things?

Use this as a rough guide, not a rule. Every home is different.

Homes with kids

Food, drinks, crayons and muddy shoes from school sports all end up on the carpet. Deal with spills as they happen (my stain removal guide covers the common ones) and plan on a deep clean when traffic areas start to look grey.

Homes with pets

Pets bring in dirt and shed hair and oils that build up in the pile, especially where they lie. Accidents are best dealt with quickly, because urine soaks down into the backing and underlay. See my pet urine carpet guide.

Allergies

I can’t make health claims, and I won’t. What I can say is that regular vacuuming with a vacuum that has a good filter removes dust and pet hair from the carpet surface, and a deep clean removes soil from lower in the pile. If allergies are a concern, ask your doctor what they recommend for your home.

Rentals

Landlords and property managers usually have carpets cleaned between tenancies, and many tenants book a clean before they move out. Check your own tenancy agreement and see tenancy.govt.nz for official information. This is general information, not legal advice. My bond carpet cleaning guide and end of tenancy cleaning page have more.

Does my carpet warranty say how often to clean?

It might. Many carpet manufacturers recommend periodic professional hot water extraction, and some warranties expect you to show the carpet has been professionally maintained.

Terms vary between brands and products, so find your own warranty and read the care section. Keep your cleaning invoices somewhere safe. If you’re unsure what your warranty needs, show it to your cleaner before booking. I use hot water extraction with a Hydramaster Boxxer 318 truck-mount, explained on my carpet cleaning page.

What are the signs my carpet needs cleaning?

  • Grey or darker lanes down hallways, in doorways and in front of the couch.
  • Pile that looks flat or matted, even after vacuuming.
  • Spots that come back after you’ve cleaned them.
  • A stale or musty smell, especially after the house has been closed up in winter.
  • Pet areas that smell when the room warms up.
  • You’re moving in or out, or getting the house ready to sell.

Can cleaning too often damage carpet?

A proper clean with the right products and thorough extraction shouldn’t harm carpet. The problems come from over-wetting and leaving detergent behind, which makes carpet resoil faster and can cause browning on some fibres.

That’s why I rinse with hot water, extract thoroughly and set up air movers for faster drying. Drying depends on ventilation, the weather, the fibre and how soiled the carpet was, and I’ll give you guidance on the day. See my drying guide and cleaning methods compared.

Is it worth cleaning just the busy areas?

Sometimes, yes. If the bedrooms are fine but the lounge and hallway are grey, cleaning just those areas can make sense. Bear in mind a cleaned area can look brighter than the rest, so I’ll tell you honestly if I think the whole room is worth doing.

Frequently asked questions

Is once a year enough for carpet cleaning?

For many adult-only homes, yes. With pets, young children or heavy foot traffic, you may want to clean more often. Regular vacuuming matters more than how often you book a deep clean.

Should I clean carpets before or after winter?

Either works. Before winter gives you a fresh start for the months when the house is closed up. In spring, you clear out what winter brought in. Choose a dry, breezy day if you can, because good ventilation helps drying.

Can I just vacuum and skip professional cleaning?

Vacuuming removes loose soil from the surface, but oily soil and residue build up lower in the pile. That’s what makes traffic lanes look grey, and a deep clean is what lifts it.

Do new carpets need cleaning?

Not for a while. Vacuum regularly, deal with spills quickly, and keep your warranty paperwork. Book a clean once the traffic areas start to look dull.

How often should rental carpets be cleaned?

Usually between tenancies, plus spot cleaning as needed. Check your tenancy agreement and tenancy.govt.nz for official information. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you clean commercial carpets too?

Yes. Offices and shared spaces get far more traffic than homes and usually need more frequent cleaning. See my commercial carpet cleaning page.
