Getting Your Carpets Ready Before Christmas Guests
If family are coming to stay over Christmas, the best time to sort the carpets is earlier than you think. Here’s how I’d plan the booking, which rooms to do first, and what to do when something gets spilt during the holidays.

When should I book a carpet clean before Christmas?
Book as early as you can, ideally once you know your guests are coming. December is one of the busiest months of the year for carpet cleaning in Christchurch, and the weeks just before Christmas fill up first.
I’m an owner-operator, so there’s only one van and one person doing the cleaning. I can’t promise a spot in the week before Christmas, and I’d rather tell you that now than let you down later. If you get in touch in November or early December, you’ll have a much better choice of days.
A few things help when you book:
- Give me two or three days that suit you, not just one.
- If you live in Rolleston, Lincoln, Kaiapoi, Rangiora or another outer area, tell me your preferred days. I group jobs by area, so being flexible helps.
- Tell me if the clean needs to be done before a particular date, such as guests arriving or a family lunch.
- Text the address and the number of rooms, plus photos of any stains, and I’ll come back with a quote. Your price is confirmed before work starts.
Is it better to clean before or after the holidays?
For most families, both have a place. A clean before Christmas means the house looks and feels fresh when people arrive. A clean in January deals with whatever the holidays leave behind.
If you only want one clean, think about what matters more to you. If you’re hosting and want the house at its best, go before. If you’ve got a big crowd, young kids and a dog, and you know the lounge will take a hammering, it can make sense to wait and clean afterwards, then just keep on top of spills in the meantime.
Which rooms should I prioritise?
Start with the rooms guests will actually use and see. You don’t always need the whole house done.
- The lounge and dining area. This is where everyone gathers, eats and sits on the floor with the kids. Traffic lanes and food marks show up most here.
- The hallway and entrance. It’s the first thing people see, and it carries the most foot traffic.
- The spare room or guest room. Even if it’s barely used, it’s often dusty, and guests will be in there with bare feet.
- Stairs, if you have them. The front edges of each step wear and darken quickly.
Bedrooms that guests won’t use can wait. If the budget is tight, a clean of the main living areas and the guest room usually makes the biggest difference. For a sense of the market, published Christchurch prices for a 3-bedroom home with a lounge run from about $150 to $250 including GST (checked October 2026).
What about the spare bed and guest room?
Spare rooms tend to collect dust because the door stays shut most of the year. A clean of the carpet in there is worth it, but don’t forget the furniture people will sleep and sit on.
I also clean mattresses and upholstery, including sofas and armchairs, so a spare mattress or a sofa bed can be done on the same visit. I look at the fabric first and test a hidden spot before I start. You can read more on my upholstery, mattress and rug cleaning page.
If you’re adding a mattress or a couch to the booking, mention it when you ask for the quote and send a photo. It helps me plan the time on the day.
How do I fit the clean around Christmas preparations?
Try to leave a gap between the clean and the busiest part of your preparations. That way you’re not trying to dry carpet, put furniture back and get the house ready all at once.
How long carpet takes to dry depends on ventilation, the weather, the carpet fibre and how soiled it was. I’ll give you guidance on the day. Early summer helps, because you can usually open windows and doors. My carpet drying guide explains what speeds things up.
Before I arrive, clear small items, toys and anything fragile off the floor. Don’t put the Christmas tree up in a room that’s being cleaned until afterwards, or plan to move it. My preparation checklist covers the rest. After the clean, I put protective film under furniture legs so nothing marks the damp carpet.
What should I do when something gets spilt over the holidays?
Act quickly and keep it simple. With a house full of people, spills are almost a given, and what you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything else.
- Scoop up anything solid first, such as trifle, gravy or cranberry sauce.
- Blot with a white cloth or paper towels. Don’t rub, which spreads the mark and roughs up the pile.
- Dab on a little cool water and blot again.
- Then stop. Don’t try one product after another, and don’t use hot water or heat.
If a mark is still there after the holidays, send me a photo and I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s likely to come out or only lighten. My carpet stain guide has more on common spills.
Is it worth cleaning carpets if visitors will bring pets?
If a visiting dog is likely to have an accident, it’s worth knowing what to do. Blot it straight away and avoid strong scented sprays, which only cover the smell. If a smell is still there once the visitors have gone, I can check the area with a UV torch and treat it. See my pet urine and odour treatment page.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book a carpet clean for Christmas?
As early as you can. Late November or early December gives you the best choice of days. The week before Christmas is usually the hardest to get, and I can’t promise availability then.
Can you clean just the lounge and guest room?
Yes. You don’t need the whole house done. Text me the address and which rooms you want, and I’ll quote for exactly that.
Can you clean a sofa bed or spare mattress at the same time?
Usually, yes. I check the fabric and test a hidden spot first. Send a photo of the mattress or sofa, and its label if it has one, when you ask for a quote.
Do you work on Saturdays in December?
I do jobs Monday to Saturday, and Saturdays are popular, so they go quickly. If you can, give me a weekday option as well.
Should I put the Christmas tree up before or after the clean?
After, if you can. It saves moving the tree and decorations, and it avoids pine needles and water from the stand ending up on freshly cleaned carpet.
