Is wool carpet common in Beckenham and St Martins homes?
Often, yes, especially in the older houses. These suburbs sit beside the Heathcote River, below Cashmere and the Port Hills, and have a good number of villas and bungalows alongside newer homes. Wool and wool-blend carpet turns up a lot in older homes, though plenty have synthetic carpet too. I check the fibre before I start rather than assuming.
How do you clean wool carpet safely?
With wool-safe products and a bit of restraint. Wool is a lovely, hard-wearing fibre, but it doesn't like harsh chemicals or being over-wetted. My approach:
- Pre-spray with a wool-safe product, matched to how soiled the carpet is.
- Rinse and extract with hot water from the truck-mount, taking care not to leave the carpet too wet.
- Groom the pile so it dries evenly, then set up air movers.
- For any pet urine on wool, use a dedicated wool-specific urine product, never an enzyme product.

Do older villas take longer to dry?
They can. Drying depends on ventilation, the weather, the carpet fibre and how soiled it was, and older homes can be cooler inside on a damp Christchurch day. Opening windows when the weather allows, or running a heat pump, helps. I'll give you guidance on the day for your home.
Can you clean rugs on polished floorboards?
Yes. Many character homes have timber floors with rugs on top. I clean rugs on site, either on a protected timber floor, on carpet, or on the driveway or in the garage. What about carpet beetles and moths?
Wool carpet and rugs are what these pests feed on, so it's worth a look under furniture and along skirting boards, especially in spring. Cleaning removes a lot of the debris they live in, but a real infestation may need pest control as well. My carpet beetle and moth guide explains what to check.
Is parking easy in older streets?
Mostly. Some older homes have no driveway or a narrow one, so I may need to park on the street. The hoses reach about 45 m from the van. If your front door is up steps or down a long path, let me know, and tell me where the outside tap is.

How can I tell if my carpet is wool?
Check any paperwork from when it was laid. Otherwise, wool tends to feel springy and slightly coarse, while many synthetics feel smoother. I'll confirm on the day before using anything.
My wool rug has a fringe. Can that be cleaned too?
Usually, yes. Fringes are often cotton, which can discolour if it's handled badly, so I take extra care with them and tell you beforehand if I expect any change.
Can old stains on wool be removed?
Some lift well and some only lighten, particularly old tea, coffee or red wine. Send me a photo and I'll give you an honest idea before you book.
Do I need to roll up rugs before you come?
No. Leave them where they are and I'll decide on the day where best to clean them. Just clear any small items off them.
Will cleaning help a wool carpet that has gone flat?
Removing the dirt and grooming the pile often helps it look fuller. If the fibres are worn through, cleaning can't replace them.
