What carpets do I usually find in Fendalton and Merivale?

These are established, leafy suburbs north-west of the central city, with many older and character homes alongside newer rebuilds. That often means good-quality wool carpet, hallway runners, and rugs laid over timber floors.

Wool is a great fibre, but it needs the right approach. I use wool-safe products, the right water temperature for the fibre, and I don’t over-wet it. My wool carpet cleaning page covers the process in detail.

How careful am I with furniture and finishes?

Very. Before I start I walk through each room with you and we agree what gets moved and what stays. A few things that help:

  • Tell me about antiques, heavy pieces or anything valuable when you book.
  • Clear ornaments, plants and small items off the floor.
  • Point out any doors or skirting you’d like me to be extra careful around.

Hoses are laid carefully through the house, and after cleaning I put protective film under furniture legs so nothing marks the damp carpet.

Can you clean rugs as well?

Yes. Wool and patterned rugs are common in these homes, and I clean them on site. Older or hand-made rugs can have dyes that need a gentler approach, so I look at each rug first and tell you honestly what I’d recommend. Rugs, upholstery and mattresses are all on my upholstery cleaning page.

What about marks on light wool carpet?

Light-coloured wool shows everything: red wine, coffee, the dog’s muddy path to the back door. Many marks come out well with the right treatment, but some older or set stains can only be lightened. I’ll be straight with you before I start. See stain treatment for more.

How does wool carpet dry in winter?

It depends on ventilation, the weather, the fibre and how soiled the carpet was. Bigger, older homes can feel cold and damp in a Christchurch winter, so I set up air movers and give you guidance on the day. My carpet drying guide has practical tips for speeding it up.

What do I need for access?

Parking near an entrance and an outside tap. The hoses reach roughly 45 m from the van, which covers most long driveways. If your house sits a long way back from the road, tell me when you book.

Which nearby suburbs do I cover?

Strowan, Bryndwr, St Albans, Papanui, Ilam and Riccarton are all close, along with the rest of Christchurch.

Frequently asked questions

Will hot water extraction shrink my wool carpet?

I use wool-safe products, keep the water temperature right for wool and don’t over-wet it. If your carpet has a known history of problems, tell me first and we’ll talk it through.

Can you clean a rug sitting on a timber floor?

Yes. I can clean it in place with the floor protected, or lay it out on the driveway or in the garage, whichever suits the rug. Send a photo of the rug, including the label if it has one.

Do you move heavy furniture?

I can move some furniture, and I’m happy to work around pieces you’d rather not move. Let me know about anything heavy or valuable when you book.

Can you do the stairs and hallway runner too?

Yes. Stairs and runners are quoted along with the rooms. A photo helps me see the length and condition.

Is a site visit possible for a large home?

Yes. For bigger jobs I can come and look before quoting, so the price is clear before any work starts.
