Most people only book a carpet cleaner every year or two, so it is hard to know what good looks like. This guide gives you the questions worth asking before you book anyone in Christchurch, and the warning signs to watch for. I have answered each question for J.S. Carpet Cleaning as well, so you can see what a straight answer sounds like.
What should you ask a carpet cleaner before booking?
Ask six things: what method they use, who actually does the job, whether they are insured, what products go on your carpet, how the price is confirmed, and what happens if something isn’t right. A good cleaner answers all six plainly, without dodging.
- What cleaning method will you use on my carpet, and why?
- Will the person who quotes be the person who turns up?
- Do you carry public liability insurance?
- Are your products safe for wool, children and pets?
- How is my price worked out, and when is it confirmed?
- If I’m not happy with something, what do I do?
You don’t need to grill anyone. Most good operators are happy to explain, because clear answers save everyone trouble on the day.
Which cleaning method should you look for?
For most Christchurch homes, hot water extraction is the method to ask about, because it rinses soil out of the carpet and pulls it away rather than just working on the surface. Ask how the machine is powered and how they handle heavy soiling.
I use a Hydramaster Boxxer 318 truck-mount. The process is a pre-spray to loosen soil, a hot water rinse and extraction, and grooming where the carpet needs it. For heavy soiling I add CRB agitation first. If you want the detail, my carpet cleaning methods compared guide covers the main options side by side, and the hot water extraction page explains my process.
One honest limit worth knowing: a truck-mount needs parking near your entrance and an outside tap, and the hoses reach roughly 45 m from the van. For some upper-floor apartments that is too far, so I offer a low-moisture clean instead and describe it plainly as a lighter clean. A cleaner who tells you about limits like this up front is usually one you can trust on everything else.
Does it matter who actually does the job?
Yes. The person in your home decides how carefully furniture is moved, how stains are tested and how the edges are finished. Ask whether the job is done by the business owner, an employee or a subcontractor, so you know who is accountable.
At J.S. Carpet Cleaning the answer is simple: I quote every job and I clean every job myself. There are no subcontractors. If you talk to me about a stain on the phone, I’m the one who will be kneeling next to it.
Why should a carpet cleaner have insurance?
Public liability insurance covers damage to your property or injury caused by the business while working. Accidents are rare, but hoses, hot water and furniture moving are involved, so it is fair to ask.
I carry $1M public liability insurance with NZI and keep full health and safety documentation. Commercial clients and property managers often ask for proof before booking, and any good operator should be able to provide it. This is general information, not insurance advice; your own home policy is worth checking too.
What products are safe for wool carpet, kids and pets?
Ask whether the products are wool-safe and whether they are suitable around children and pets. Wool is common in New Zealand homes and can be damaged by harsh, high-alkaline chemicals, so this matters more here than in many countries.
The products I use are wool-safe, safe around children and pets, and the same ones I use at home. If your carpet is wool, my wool carpet cleaning page explains how I treat it. If you have pets with accidents, the pet urine and odour treatment page explains the extra steps involved.
How should a carpet cleaning price be confirmed?
The price should be clear and agreed before any cleaning starts. You should know what is included, which rooms are covered, and whether stain or odour work is extra.
For context, published Christchurch prices for a 3-bedroom home with a lounge run from about $150 to $250 including GST (checked October 2026). Your own job depends on room sizes, soiling, stairs, stains and access.
With me, you text the address and the number of rooms for a standard clean. For stains, upholstery or unusual marks, a few photos help. Your price is confirmed before work starts, and for bigger jobs I can do a site visit. Quotes are free, and I usually reply quickly.
What happens if something isn’t right after the clean?
A good cleaner tells you what to expect before they start, then walks you through the result. Ask how they handle a spot that reappears or an area you’re not happy with.
I’m honest about stains before I begin. Some marks come right out, some can only be lightened, and I’d rather say so than over-promise. If something isn’t right, let me know and I’ll come back and take a look.
What are the red flags when choosing a carpet cleaner?
The main warning signs are a very low advertised price that grows on the day, pressure to buy add-ons on the spot, and no proof of insurance. None of these means a business is dishonest, but each one is worth a question.
A price that changes once they arrive
A low headline price can be fine, as long as you know what it includes. If the price changes once someone is standing in your lounge, you have lost the chance to compare. Ask for the total in writing first.
Pressure selling
Protectors, deodorisers and extra treatments can be useful in the right situation. They shouldn’t be pushed as urgent. A good operator explains the option and lets you decide.
Vague answers about insurance or who will turn up
If someone can’t tell you whether they’re insured, or who will be in your home, keep asking until you get a clear answer, or keep looking.
Promises that sound too certain
No honest cleaner can promise that every stain or odour will vanish, or give you an exact drying time for every carpet. Drying depends on ventilation, the weather, the carpet fibre and how soiled it was. I give guidance on the day for your home. If you want to plan around it, see my carpet drying guide.
Are online reviews a reliable guide?
Reviews help, especially when they describe real jobs and the owner replies to them. Read a few recent ones rather than looking only at the score, and check whether they mention the things you care about, such as stains, pets or punctuality.
J.S. Carpet Cleaning has a 5.0 rating on Google. Even so, I’d encourage you to ask me the questions above directly. The answers matter more than any star rating.

Frequently asked questions
How many quotes should I get for carpet cleaning?
Two or three is plenty. Compare what is included, not just the number, and ask each business the same questions so the answers are easy to compare.
Is a cheaper carpet clean always worse?
Not always. A lower price can be fair for a smaller or lightly soiled job. What matters is that the price is clear before work starts and doesn’t grow on the day.
Should I ask for proof of insurance?
Yes, it is a reasonable request. I carry $1M public liability insurance with NZI and can show it. Commercial clients and property managers often need it for their records.
Do I need to move furniture before the cleaner arrives?
Clear small items, breakables and anything on the floor. I can move standard furniture, and I put protective film under furniture legs after cleaning so they don’t touch the damp carpet.
Can a carpet cleaner tell me if a stain will come out?
An honest one will tell you what is likely. Send a photo and I’ll say whether it should come out, may only lighten, or is probably permanent.
What areas does J.S. Carpet Cleaning cover?
Christchurch plus Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, West Melton, Kaiapoi and Rangiora. I’m based in Upper Riccarton and group jobs by area.
